Mowing A Steep, Wet Retention Pond | Ventrac 4520 With Tough Cut MowerThe purpose of a retention basin or pond is to collect stormwater run-off around commercial buildings or properties where it could overwhelm the sewer system. There has to be a retention basin to collect rainwater and slow the flow down during rainwater events. Retention basins require specialized maintenance with commercial-grade equipment that can handle the steep banks and wet conditions. Most municipal ordinances mandate or regulate the regular maintenance of these areas, and it is general practice to mow these pond banks down so that plants do not develop root structures. Saplings can develop a root structure that can displace the ground and cause rain ruts that would ultimately lead to erosion. Typically once or twice a year maintenance of these areas can keep the trees and other invasive plants from establishing and causing infrastructural problems down the road. This site represents all the challenges one might face when caring for a retention pond. This permanent water management system has very steep sides and, like most, has a fence around it as an additional obstacle. The Ventrac 4520 tractor and Tough Cut is the perfect tool for this job because it handles steep areas very well in addition to wet areas, and it’s highly maneuverable. With 3-5 inches of water in the bottom and a treeline that prevents it from drying out completely, the approach is to mow down all of the sides and then get as close to the middle as possible. Without the proper equipment for stormwater run-off ponds, a contractor will often need to rely on hand labor to access and maintain it. But with an out-front designed mower deck on the Ventrac, operators have more control of the deck than with most other machines. As a contractor, using equipment like the Ventrac is imperative to keep operations as efficient as possible and provide the best service for customers. Contractors can continue to maintain these basins year after year with long-term contracts because of specialized equipment that is made for jobs like this.
